University VPN How To

If you are off campus and want to access exclusive University of Utah resources, like using Remote Desktop to access a Physics Astronomy server or workstation, you first need to connect to the university network using  a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

IMPORTANT: You do not need to connect to the VPN to access most University resources like Canvas, UMail, UBox, CIS, Kronos, Pulse etc. Do not stay logged in if you do not need the VPN, when you are done you should "Disconnect." Everything you do while using the VPN client is subject to all University of Utah policies and procedures.

Install VPN Client

First you must install the VPN client,  go to software.utah.edu on your computer, click "Visit Our Store"

Office of Software Licensing

Login then download and install the free Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.

 Passcodes and 2nd Passwords

The University requires dual authentication using DUO. If you see a "DUO Passcode" or “Second Password” at any time, the first password is just your uNID password and the second passcode is determined by the following.

Use the "DUO Passcode" field to tell Duo how you want to authenticate. Here's how:

Type This... To Do This...
push

Push a login request to your phone (if you have Duo Mobile installed and activated on your iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, or BlackBerry device). Just review the request and tap "Approve" to log in.

#passcode

Log in using a passcode, either generated with Duo Mobile, sent via SMS, generated by your hardware token, or provided by an administrator. Examples: "123456" or "1456789"

sms

Get a new batch of SMS passcodes. Your login attempt will fail — log in again with one of your new passcodes.

You can also add a number to the end of these factor names if you have more than one device registered. For example, push2 will send a login request to your second phone, phone3 will call your third phone, etc.

Connect

After you have installed the program you will need to connect to the University’s VPN by running Cisco AnyConnect. If vpnaccess.utah.edu is not listed then you will have to type it yourself.

After clicking “Connect” you will see something like this, use your uNID login and the "Passcode" from above.

After you login you should now be connected, and be able to use Remote Desktop and access restricted university resources.
