VPN How To

If you are off campus and want to Remote Desktop into a Physics Astronomy server you first need to setup a Virtual Private Network (VPN). First you must first install the VPN client. The automated install doesn’t work well unless you use the default browser for your OS (Explorer or Safari).

First, go to log in

The University requires dual authentication using DUO. If you see a “Second Password” referenced several times. The first password is just your UnID password, the second password is determined by the following.

Use the "Second Password" field to tell Duo how you want to authenticate. Here's how:

A passcode

Log in using a passcode, either generated with Duo Mobile, sent via SMS, generated by your hardware token, or provided by an administrator. Examples: "123456" or "1456789"


Push a login request to your phone (if you have Duo Mobile installed and activated on your iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, or BlackBerry device). Just review the request and tap "Approve" to log in.


Authenticate via phone callback.


Get a new batch of SMS passcodes. Your login attempt will fail — log in again with one of your new passcodes.

You can also add a number to the end of these factor names if you have more than one device registered. For example, push2 will send a login request to your second phone, phone3 will call your third phone, etc.

After logging with your UnID, you should see this:

It’s important that you at least skim the instructions in the right panel. Windows users will first have to perform an extra step to make one of their trusted sites.

If the automatic install fails (It often does) you should get a screen similar to this. Just download the installer and do a typical install for your OS


After you have installed the program you will need to connect to the University’s VPN by running Cisco AnyConnect. If isn’t listed then you will have to type it yourself.

After clicking “Connect” you will see something like this again.

After you login you should now be connected, and able to use Remote Desktop.

IMPORTANT: Do not stay logged in if you are not using VPN, when you are done you should "Disconnect"
