Only those who have received proper training are allowed to operate the machines in the wood shop. The training (Shop Course) is offered as needed by appointment only. To schedule a course please contact the shop manager, Harold Simpson (
). The machinery in the shop course includes: planer-jointer-drill press-disk and band sander-dado, radial, table, band and panel saws and miscellaneous hand tools.

In general, tools are not loaned from the Shop. We maintain a tool crib from which tools can be borrowed (24 hrs) by people in the research labs. The tools are essential for the functioning of the facilities. The wood shop project serves to promote woodworking know-how and safety with machines. Special attention is placed on the Shop Safety Rules and U of U Emergency Procedures.

On completion of the shop course, a key (computer code) is issued and a photo posted in the student shop. The wood shop and tool crib are for the students, staff, and faculty to maintain their facilities as needed and to meet functional changes in their research activities.
