The Department of Physics & Astronomy is located on the north-west side of campus, on what was the original "Engineering Mall" on the University of Utah's main campus in the east bench of Salt Lake City. We are located just east of the Kingsbury Hall Performing Arts Center, and across the street from "Greek Row". Our main departmental office is located in room 201 of the James Fletcher Building. The University of Utah is a large campus at over 1,534 acres (6.21 km2). Before visiting, we recommend looking at a map or two beforehand to assure a more enjoyable visit.

 

Transportation Options & Directions

Getting Here by Car

From the Salt Lake International Airport (Map)

From the airport exit, take the I-80 Eastbound ramp on the left to "City Center/Ogden/Provo". Keep left at the fork, follow signs for "I-80 East" and merge onto I-80 E. Take Exit 121 for 600 South. Merge onto 600 S. Turn left at State Street. Turn right at 100 South and head straight (east). Turn right at 1455 East (look for the gold ROTC anchor on your right).

From I-15 Northbound (Map)

On I-15, take Exit 306 towards 600 South. Turn left at State Street. Turn right at 100 South and head straight (east). Turn right at 1455 East (look for the gold ROTC anchor on your right).

From I-15 Southbound (Map)

On I-15, take Exit 121 towards 600 South. Turn left at State Street. Turn right at 100 South and head straight (east). Turn right at 1455 East (look for the gold ROTC anchor on your right).

From the University Guest House (Map)

The department is about 15 minutes walk from the University Guest House. Take Legacy Bridge over the street, then follow straight west towards the Marriott Library, then turn right and walk northwest towards the pavilion in front of the Student Services Building, head west until you reach President's Circle. Take a right and follow President's Circle. Turn right at 1400 East, and walk to the end of the street. The James Fletcher Building will be directly in front of you. Consult reception desk at the Guest House for more details if desired.

From the Student Union or Student Services Building (Map)

Walk northwest towards the pavilion in front of the Student Services Building, head west until you reach President's Circle. Take a right and follow President's Circle. Turn right at 1400 East, and walk to the end of the street. The James Fletcher Building will be directly in front of you and the South Physics Building will be to your right.

Parking

  • On weekdays before 8:00 pm, park in the visitor pay lot, or at the metered parking on President's Circle.
  • On weekdays after 8:00 pm, proceed to either of the two free, large parking lots (see map).
  • On weekends, free parking is normally available all day in both large parking lots.

**Note: Some parking spots are marked with a brown/black "Reserved" sign. Most of these reserved stalls are enforced from 6 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday. After 6:00 pm, you will be able to park in those spots without a problem. There are only a couple extended-hour reserved stalls, which are enforced either 24 hours or from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The enforcement times are listed on each sign. Please pay attention to the enforcement times listed on these signs.

Salt Lake International Airport

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is located ten miles west of the University of Utah. There are 3 terminals (Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and the International Terminal), 5 concourses (A-E) and 83 aircraft gates. Delta Air Lines and SkyWest Airlines operate from Terminal 2. All other airlines serving Salt Lake City use Terminal 1. Click the following link for SLC airport terminal maps.

 

Public Transit

Utah Transit Authority (TRAX, Bus, etc.)

UTA TRAX is Salt Lake Valley’s light rail transit system. It has three main lines – the Red, Green, and Blue Lines.

To get to the Department of Physics & Astronomy, or the Guest House from the Airport: take the Green Line Trax to the Court House stop and transfer to the Red Line to University. For the Department of Physics & Astronomy, get off at the Stadium stop. For the Guest House, get off at the Ft. Douglas stop. For a detailed map of these routes, and to lookup bus schedules, visit the UTA website.

To get to the Airport from the Department of Physics & Astronomy or the Guest House: take the Red Line to the Court House stop and transfer to the Green Line to the Airport.

Campus Shuttles

The University of Utah operates a fleet of shuttle buses that operate throughout the University campus Monday through Friday from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. (depending on the route). They are free and available to the general public for no additional charge.

To get to/from the Department of Physics & Astronomy, the Guest House, or a TRAX stop, you will either take the Blue or the Red shuttle. For a detailed map of these routes, and to lookup bus schedules, visit the University of Utah's Commuter Services website.

The Department of Physics & Astronomy is spread over three buildings; JFB (James Fletcher building), SP (South Physics), and INSCC (Intermountain Network & Scientific Computation Center) all shown here on the University map. Most of our speakers stay at the University Guest House, which is conveniently located right on the campus. To get there, take a taxi cab from the airport (in case driver is not certain where to go, the general direction is towards the university hospital) - the ride is about 25 minutes (and costs about $30).
