RESEARCH INTERESTS
Bill Sutherland is a theoretical physicist interested in all aspects of the cooperative behavior of systems with many degrees of freedom. In particular, he has investigated phenomena where the interaction between the many degrees of freedom is intrinsically strong, such as phase transitions and the critical point, quantum fluids, soliton modes and chaotic behavior. In order to understand these strongly interacting systems, he often exploits integrable systems which are exactly soluble, yet non-trivial. In addition, he has studied the consequences of quasiperiodicity - a borderline situation between the strict periodicity of the crystal and the random arrangement of a fluid - for the physics of a material. He emphasizes physical understanding over application, and has a long-standing interest in, and affection for, mathematical physics.
