SnowPAC 2013 -- Black Hole Fingerprints: Dynamics, Disruptions & Demographics, March 17-22, 2013

The 5th annual Snowbird Workshop on Particle Astrophysics, Astronomy, and Cosmology (SnowPAC) will be held from 17-23 March 2013 at the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird Ski Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, USA. The conference will focus on the interaction of massive black holes with the stars around them, and our ability to use stellar dynamics and tidal disruption events to understand the demographics of massive black holes. We will cover the following broad topics:
     - Supermassive black hole demographics & formation
     - Tidal disruption observations, signatures & rates
     - Nuclear star clusters & the dynamics of dense stellar systems
     - Hypervelocity stars
     - Black holes in star clusters & intermediate mass black holes

 

SnowCLUSTER - Physics of Galaxy Clusters, March 24 - 29, 2013

Clusters of galaxies have long been recognized as sensitive cosmological probes. However, to realize their full constraining potential for "precision cosmology," it is essential to know the cluster physics in detail. The aim of this workshop is to bring together observers in the X-ray and SZ fields, people working on gravitational lensing mass measurements and non-thermal phenomena in the radio band, and theorists developing numeric simulations and
working on plasma processes. The focus will be on recent progress in our understanding of the cluster astrophysics and how the various uncertainties and nontrivial processes in the ICM may affect cosmological tests. Apart from the usual suspects such as Chandra,
XMM-Newton, Suzaku, ground-based SZ instruments and optical telescopes, we will discuss the new Planck and possibly ALMA and NuStar observations, as well as expectations for Astro-H. On the theoretical side, simulations with various microphysical properties of the ICM will be discussed.

-SZ observations: individual clusters, samples
-Combining SZ and X-ray data
-X-ray masses and their uncertainties
-Gravitational lensing masses
-Mass scaling relations
-X-ray observations and simulations of cluster mergers
-Relaxed clusters: turbulence, ICM clumpiness
-AGN-ICM interaction
-Relativistic matter in clusters
-Transport processes in the ICM

The workshop is sponsored and organized by the Chandra X-ray Center, NASA GSFC and the University of Utah.

SnowDARK, March 22-25, 2013

The workshop will focus on the theoretical motivation, physical properties, detection techniques, and experimental searches for a broad range of well-motivated dark matter candidates. The presentations and discussions at the workshop will help the conveners and participants of the "Non-WIMP dark matter" subgroup of Snowmass-2013 develop a roadmap for dark matter research into the next decade.
