Growing An Astronomy Program at the University

In the last few years, the Department of Physics & Astronomy has worked to grow an astronomy program with the support of the Willard L. Eccles Charitable Foundation. The department added an astronomy minor program, and used an $88,000 Eccles grant to refurbish an observatory atop the South Physics Building.

IYA 2009 Film Festival

As part of the ongoing celebration of the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, the department is hosting the University of Utah’s IYA 2009 Film Festival. An array of films for the whole family are viewed monthly in the A. Ray Olpin University Union Theater on the University of Utah campus. Popcorn provided and all shows are free and open to the public!

2009-2010 Conferences & Workshops

During the last academic year, the Department of Physics & Astronomy sponsored three scientific conferences/workshops in Salt Lake City centered on the research strengths in the department: astrophysics and condensed matter physics.
