The Unix mail and emacs sendmail Utilities
Most students are already familiar with electronic mail and have a
favorite mail utility. Under Unix the popular mail utilities include
thunderbird, pine, and elm. There are also
web-based mail utilities. The Physics department has one that is
accessed through the URL http://mail.utah.edu. GNU emacs also
has a mail utility called RMAIL and a separate, easy-to-use mail
sending feature. Then there is the standard Unix mail utility.
The thunderbird and pine utilities are quite user-friendly
and have the capability of sending and receiving files as standard
attachments. The GNU emacs RMAIL utility is very powerful,
because it is embedded in a versatile text editor. Which one you use
is mostly a matter of personal preference.
Here we describe the standard Unix mail utility (the Model-T of mail
handlers) and the emacs mail sender.
