HAVASUPAI TRIBE SEEKS FLOOD DISASTER RELIEF

The Havasupai Tribe of Arizona seeks aid for the flooding emergency on its Reservation located in the Grand Canyon. The flooding began Sunday when a dam breached near the Grand Canyon destroying homes, and forcing members to evacuate by helicopter. Many tribal members have been relocated to a Red Cross shelter in a gymnasium at Peach Springs, about 60 miles southwest of Supai village. The Tribe is accepting donations, including bottled water, canned goods, personal hygiene items, diapers and baby formula, dog food, and horse feed.

Some information regarding the 1993 flood, from what I've been able to find: 93.havasupaiflood.com

"In 1910, a flash flood rampaged through Supai and filled the canyon wall to wall with 20 feet of water. The village rebuilt downstream at its present location in a wider section of the canyon." (source)

General News Articles

Story by Chris Kahn of the Associated Press, featuring Ferdinand Rivera.

Associated Press writer, Felicia Fonseca. In her story it says, "Last weekend's flooding wasn'ta s severe as previous floods, Melis said, but the isolation of the canyon will make it difficult to rebuild."

Another blog but quotes Billy Jack saying, "The whole area's unstable, especially toward the falls. The tourist dollars are really critical."

Other

Question: Does anyone know where and when the dams broke and what path they would follow to get to the canyon? Was it one dam or two? Answer: The Redlands Dam breach was between 6 and 6:30 AM, Sunday. In that time, the "lake" (a 4.5 acre pond) dropped 5 feet. By the time that water went 45 miles down Cataract Canyon and reached Havasu Creek it would not have been much more than a one foot wave if that. (source) Compare to this.

Also, if you were there and would like to send me your own story or pictures to post here, I would gladly do it (and change the formatting of this a bit too). (Or if you have a blog and want me to copy some parts and link it here.) If there's anything that I should change, then just let me know. kaggie at gmail dot com
