Discussion: You MUST be enrolled in one of the available discussion sections In fact, the only way to enroll in Physics 2020 is through discussion enrollment. You are expected to attend the discussion section in which you are enrolled. Discussion section enrollment maxima vary with room size but do not exceed 40.

Prerequisites:Physics 2010 or the equivalent
Coverage: We will essentially pick up where 2010 ended, somewhere far into Chapter 14: The Ideal Gas Law and Kinetic Theory, and move through as much of the remainder of the book as our pace allows. We will skip some sections entirely, some will be left to you enterely as happened occasionally during the Fall semester (meaning the material will be assigned through homework problems), and hopefully we will get close to the end of the book.

Organization:

A: There will be four mid-semester examinations spaced at approximately three week intervals, with the first midsemester occurring at the end of the fourth full week of class. Exam coverage will be from the previous exam to that work most recently covered in discussion. The exams will be a combination of problem solving and interpretative (conceptual) components. Maximum score will be 100 points on each exam. There will be no make-ups for any of the mid-semester exams. At the end of the semester the lowest score of the four mid-semester exams you take will be dropped. This means that the mid-semester portion of your final course grade will be based on the three highest mid-semester scores. This dropped exam may be your poorest mid-semester performance, one you missed , or one you spaced.
B: There will be a comprehensive Final Exam covering all the chapters of the semester's work. Maximum score for the final exam is 200 points. Unlike the mid-semester exams the final exam will not be returned to you. The purpose of the final is strictly for assessment, unlike the mid-semester exams, which are for both assessment and instruction. In other words, the final exam is for the instructor to help determine course performance. Of course, you will be allowed to examine your final during the first week of the summer semester.
C: 100 points maximum will be applied to your point total based on your work in discussion. This score will be earned on the basis of performance in homework done in WebAssign. Do not disregard the importance of the discussion part of your course grade. It has the same value as a mid-semester exam, and you cannot drop the discussion grade.
D: To recapitulate, there will be 300 points from mid-semester exams, 200 points from the final exam and 100 undred points from discussion work. That is a total of 600 points. The final course grade will be determined by how many total points out of the maximum of 600 points you earn. As of the present moment, no course mean has been set a priori; you can anticipate a course mean somewhere around a B- as a traditional mean for this physics course.
Regrading: It is understood that there will be times when you receive a graded exam and you do not understand why certain points have been taken off, how the point deductions were made, an actual grading error was made, or you think the grader missed something. If you have a problem with the exam grading, use the following procedure:
1) Make a notation on the exam on the problem you wish the grader to recheck. Be specific about the error. At the end of the discussion section in which the exam was handed back, resubmit the exam to your TA. Your TA will make sure the exam is directed to the appropriate grader for re-evaluation.
2) Resubmit the exam for regrading no later than the end of the discussion period in which the exam was returned to you. We will not regrade any exams resubmitted after this "end-of-the-class" deadline.
3) If, after the regrading activity you are still not satisfied with your treatment, see the Professor. He will be the final arbiter in case you and the grader cannot agree on how the item in question was graded. However, you must go through this regrading routine before your course instructor will exercise final judgement on the merits of your complaint.

3. Classmates: Classmates are an excellent source of help. Be sure to get one or two phone numbers of classmates for help, clarification of class notes, getting missed items, and even a shoulder to cry on. Group study has been shown in a large number of studies to be an effective method for students to become successful learners in a demanding subject.
4. Prescribed communal study areas: James Fletcher Building 325.
5. Your TA's will maintain all three of their office hours in a "public" setting. The location is JFB 325 on the south end of the building. A schedule will be set up so that a TA is present in 325 for a prescribed number of hours per week, and any student in any section can come in for assistance. Think of this as a tutoring center at which the tutors are only Physics 2020 TA's.
6. Tutoring: Tutoring is available through the University of Utah Tutoring Center in the Student Services Building, Room 330. Students are given a list of tutors to contact and can schedule a day, evening, or weekend appointment. Low-income students may qualify for free tutoring. For more information call 581-5153 or visit www.saff.utah.edu/Tutoring/. Departmental Tutoring: The Department of Physics will develop a list of tutors from among both undergraduate and graduate students. When available the list can be obtained at the Department's front office area, JFB 201.
7. WebAssign communication venues (Fora, Help Desk, and/or internal e-mail). Use the public fora in WebAssign for posing questions about problems and getting fairly rapid responses from other students and course instructors.
8. There is an entire universe out there for your taking on the "WEB". All you have to do is go out and look for it. For those of you who do not have computer accounts at the University, get one. They are free of charge. You do need to go to the Marriott Library on campus and follow the instructions to sign up for an account. At the Marriott Library, where all of academic computing is housed, you will find lots of assistance to help you through the sign-up process.
