The computer lab is in 206 S Physics. It is open at all hours. Access is by a computer-controlled lock activated by scanning the magnetic stripe on your student ID card. You must be registered for this class in order to be assured of access. Students doing classwork in physics classes have first priority on the lab computers. The course computers can also be accessed over the campus network. It is desirable to find a workstation running X-window software.
Craig McNeile will be available from 3:20 to 4:20 in the computer lab (206 South Physics) on Fridays, for help with any aspect of the course. Student's may also ask for help anytime at his office, however he will only be guaranteed to be there, if an appointment is first made.
William Krivan will be available from 4:30 to 5:30 in the computer lab (206 South Physics) on Wednesdays, for help with the course.
Questions about the course and the homework assignments can be emailed to Craig McNeile at any time, to the address above.
The course will be taught from the web manual for the class. The web manual will contain all the class handouts and assignments. The web manual can be accessed using through netscape, and should be accessible from anywhere on the internet. Run the commandnetscapeon our machines or from elsewherenetscape http://www.physics.utah.edu/~p373
Important announcements will be made in class and emailed to the students. The announcements will be archived online. It is the students responsibility to regularly check their email for the class announcements.
There will only be a final exam. Grading formula: Final 20%, class project 15%, homework 65%.
The final exam will be based on the material covered in the homework assignments. The class project is a requirement to write a "medium" sized program. There will be three possible choices of program to write; these will be posted in mid April. The students will have until the end of the quarter to turn in the completed project. It is anticipated that the students should spend about twice as much effort on the project as they do on a single homework assignment.
